Canada geese are extremely bold and intelligent creatures. It is almost impossible to frighten them with conventional methods. After a short time the geese will become accustomed to the presence of "artificial goose repellents" such as swans, floating objects, hanging plastic balls, wooden cutouts, fencing around ponds, and other such props and are not frightened by them.
The instinct of the Border Collie is to herd and not attack. Canada geese view Border Collies as a predatory threat and will avoid them—first by flying away and then ultimately leaving the area entirely. The aim of goose control is to make the geese feel unsafe in the area at all times.
By introducing what the geese see as a "predator" back into their environment we make the geese feel uncomfortable living on the properties we work. Our herding Border Collie dogs not only "stalk" the Canada geese and give them the "eye", they also follow the Canada geese into the water without harming the geese.
When the pond or lake is too big for the dog to safely swim we use kayaks and other methods to encourage the geese to leave the property. Thus, using an environmentally friendly and humane form of Canada goose control.
Our Canada goose control program is deployed in a few different stages. Initially we apply an intense effort of harassment to force the geese to change their habits and into believing the property is an unsafe area.
A Handler and Border Collie will visit the property daily at multiple times harassing any geese on site into leaving. During this period the geese will alter their feeding times. Eventually, after persistent harassment by the Border Collie, the geese learn that those areas are unsafe and will move elsewhere. The next stage is a follow up maintenance program of daily visits at random times of the day or evening.
Our experience has taught us that daily visits with the Border Collie to the property at random times will deter the geese from returning, as well as keeping any new geese from taking up residency. This is especially true during the mating season. Each year Canada geese will return to their place of birth or to areas where they have previously nested.
This process begins approximately in February with mating, nesting in April, with goslings appearing in May, adult geese begin molting in June and will remain unable to fly until August.
At no extra cost, we also provide egg depredation services to prohibit population growth and aid our clients in obtaining the necessary federal permits.
What we don't do:
We do not allow our dogs to touch or harm the geese. Our specially trained Border Collies are trained to only harass and herd the geese.
We will not trap, gas or harm the geese in any way.
We never work geese that are molting. During the 6 week molting season they can not fly well and there is a possibility of injury.
We do not harass newborn goslings, their parents or an injured goose.
